WHAT'S NEW WITH THE CHOIRS AT ST. PAUL'S?
Highlighting Women Composers at St. Paul’s
You may be noticing at St. Paul’s an intentional inclusion of women composers amidst the music offered in services and concerts. Please keep ears, minds and hearts open especially for the 12th century chant of Hildegard of Bingen; the Magnificat of 17th-century Milanese nun Chiara Cozzolani; choral and chamber music of Fanny Hensel (sister of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy); choral music of English composers Sarah MacDonald, Cecilia McDowall, and Judith Weir; choral music of American composers Maggie Burk, Eleanor Daley, Melissa Dunphy, Elizabeth Kimble, Jane Marshall, and Undine Smith Moore; and most especially premieres of the poignant psalm anthems of St. Paul’s composer-in-residence Patricia Van Ness, pictured at left. Learn more about the work of this talented composer at her web page, patriciavanness.com.
Drawing on the ancient monastic offices of Vespers and Compline, the beautiful and uniquely Anglican service of Choral Evensong (sung Evening prayer) is centered on prayer, psalms, and Scripture readings. In addition to Choral Evensong, the Evensong Series includes seasonal services and concerts.
