Director of Music Since the fall of 2005, Susan Jane Matthews has been the Director of Music at St. Paul’s Burlingame. She is organist, director of the Chancel Choir, and the founding director of the St. Paul’s Choir School for boys and girls. She has served as Director of Music at St. Michael’s Episcopal Cathedral, Boise, Idaho and as Principal Organist of Grace Cathedral, San Francisco. Dr. Matthews holds a Bachelor of Arts from Haverford College and a Masters of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts in organ performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music. She has presented choral and organ workshops at American Guild of Organists Conventions, and has served as an organist and as junior girls headmaster at the Royal School of Church Music training course at King’s College in her hometown of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. As a concert organist, she has performed throughout the United States and in Europe, and has been featured on several American radio programs. www.susanjanematthews.com Saturday Evensong Series Drawing on elements of the monastic offices of Vespers and Compline, the beautiful and uniquely Anglican service of Choral Evensong (sung Evening prayer) is centered on prayer, psalms, and Scripture readings. In addition to Choral Evensong, this Saturday series includes seasonal services and concerts.
Assistant Director (Choir School) Thomas Joyce joined the staff of St. Paul's in September 2011 where he assists in directing Choir School rehearsals and is alto section leader in the Chancel Choir. In addition to his great talents as a choral trainer and countertenor, the community of St. Paul's benefits from his consummate skills as both organist and composer. Originally from Cambridge, England, he has spent most of his life living in the United States. He was a chorister at the Washington National Cathedral where he learned to play the piano and the pipe organ. Dr. Joyce holds degrees in music from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Yale University, and the University of Washington. He has served a number of prominent churches throughout the United States as an organist and choirmaster, including Trinity Church on-the-Green, New Haven; St. Paul’s Church, K Street, Washington D.C.; St. Mark’s Cathedral and Church of the North American Martyrs, Seattle; and Grace Cathedral, San Francisco. |
